TV maths

BBC1 Controller Danny Cohen has been explaining the economics of tv to the Radio Times. Readers wanted to know why he'd cancelled long-running sitcom "My Family".

"There’s only a finite amount of money and, by ending some shows, I freed the money to do Call the Midwife in January. That’s how it works.”

Series 11 of My Family attracted audiences of around 4m, compared with the 8m and above for Series 3, 4 and 5. Recent episodes of The Voice are below 6m, compared with peaks above 11m for the blind auditions.

This last Sunday, Countryfile returned an audience of 5.7m; The Voice results show which followed got 5.8m. The current series of the Voice, which will run to some 20 shows, has cost an estimated £11m. Countryfile produces 51 shows a year, for less than £4m.
