Leader Kim

Congratulations to Kim Shillinglaw, new Controller of BBC2 and BBC4,  promoted from Commissioner of Science and Natural History programmes.

With a degree in history from Wadham College, Oxford, she became a researcher then programme maker at Observer Films, part of the Guardian Media Group, from 1990 to 1996. There followed work at ITV and Channel 4 before joining the BBC in 2006.

Kim was one of the outriders on the development of Delivering Quality First in 2011 -  chairing a "taskforce" charged with answering the question "How can we forge a clearer, more productive relationship between our public service and commercial operations ?". In other thankless tasks, she also led the BBC's stab at 3D programming, dropped after two years, because, she said in scientific terms, the glasses were "quite hassly". The only programme ever "made" with DMI was one of her commissions - Bang Goes The Theory.

In 2010 she told Broadcast magazine, "I’m constantly accused of saying what I think too often". She joined Twitter in 2011, and has managed only 40 tweets since then - but there are examples of plain speaking, like this message of support for departing DG George Entwistle.
