Coles' roles

BBC Director of Operations, Dominic Coles is off to Discovery Communications - the US conglomerate that has provided opportunities in the past for luminaries such as Jana Bennett and Pat Younge.

Harvard-trained Dom will be COO and CFO at Discovery Networks, Western Europe. Whether this will afford him a salary increase on his current licence-fee-funded package of £307,800 is not reported. Discovery Communications' overall CEO, David Zaslav, earned $33.3m in the last financial year - 5.2 times the median for the company's four next highest-paid executives. People who care about corporate governance and the like reckon even 3 times the next salary down is a bit too much.

Mr Coles' departure leaves two interesting holes beyond the mighty Operations unit - one, as non-executive director of BBC Studios & Post Production; another as director of TVC Developments, partnering with Stanhope on Television Centre re-configuration.
